Freeland is a census-designated place (CDP) in Island County, Washington County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,313 at the 2000 United States Census census. The town received its name based on its origins as a commune (intentional community) in the early 1900s—literally, in the eyes of its socialism founders, the land of the town was to be free for all people. (Some of the first settlers were veterans of a prior experiment in socialism, the nearby Equality colony.)In a new poll, 19% of people in Freeland, Washington are interested in replacement windows designed to reduce their energy bills.As of the census of 2000, there were 1,313 people, 561 households, and 379 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 390.4 people per square mile (150.9/km²). There were 664 housing units at an average density of 197.4/sq mi (76.3/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.36% White (U.S. Census) 0.46% African American (U.S. Census) American, 0.99% Native American (U.S. Census) American, 0.84% Asian (U.S. Census) 0.08% Pacific Islander (U.S. Census) Islander, 0.38% from Race (United States Census) races, and 2.89% from two or more races.
