Founded in 1787, incorporated in 1847, it is the List of North Carolina county seats seat of Wayne County, North Carolina County . The city is situated in the North Carolina's Coastal Plain and is bordered on the south by the Neuse River and the west by the Little River, about 35 miles southwest of Greenville, North Carolina and 55 miles southeast of Raleigh, North Carolina the state capital.
