Independence is the fourth largest city in the U.S. state of Missouri, and is contained within the counties of Jackson County, Missouri (primarily) and Clay County, Missouri It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The city had a total population of 110,704 in 2007. Independence is one of two county seats of Jackson County, and is known as the "Queen City of the Trails" on account of having been the point of departure of the Santa Fe Trail Fe, California Trail and Oregon Trails.
