The community was originally settled by the French in 1720 after lead ore was discovered. It was called 'La Bonne Terre', "the good earth."In a new poll, 11% of people in Bonne Terre, Missouri are interested in new windows designed to prepare their home for sale.As of the census of 2000, there were 4,039 people, 1,554 households, and 1,062 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,000.0 people per square mile (386.0/km²). There were 1,685 housing units at an average density of 417.2/sq mi (161.0/km²).
