Hibbing is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota Louis County, Minnesota, United States The population was 17,071 at the United States Census 2000 census. The city was built on the rich iron ore of the Mesabi Iron Range. In earlier times, this area was called "meebeega", which roughly is translated to Chippewa as "hard earth or ground". At the edge of town is the largest open-pit iron mine in the world. U.S. Route 169 in Minnesota Highway 169, Minnesota State Highway 37 Highway 37, and Minnesota State Highway 73 Highway 73 are three of the main arterial routes in the city.In a new poll, 20% of people in Hibbing, Minnesota want more information about new windows designed to reduce their energy bills.As of the census of 2000, there were 17,071 people, 7,439 households, and 4,597 families residing in the city. The population density was 94.0 people per square mile (36.3/km²). There were 8,037 housing units at an average density of 44.2/sq mi (17.1/km²).
