Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana County, Indiana, United States. The city is located in the southeastern portion of the Chicago metropolitan area and is approximately 25 miles from downtown Chicago. The population was 102,746 at the United States Census, 2000 census, making it the fifth largest city in the state. Gary was once the second largest city in Indiana, a position now held by Fort Wayne. It borders Lake Michigan and is known for its large steel mills, high crime rate, and Democratic political leaning, with one study rating it the second-most Democratic city in the United States. Snowfall in Gary can average 24 to 36 inches per winter, but sometimes large blizzards hit because of "lake effect snow," a phenomenon wherein large amounts of water evaporated from the lake deposits onto the shoreline areas inordinate amounts of snow.
