New windows resources & information
Selecting and purchasing replacement windows for your home is a big investment; we have compiled these articles to help you with your choice.
Replacement windows should be distinguished from new-construction windows. New-construction windows of recent vintage have a "nailing fin" along the outer frame. Older new construction windows do not have nailing fins and are essentially the same as a replacement window. This fin provides a surface so that the window can be nailed in from the outside of the home before the application of flashing, siding or brick and stone veneers. New construction windows can, in some instances, be used as "replacement windows" ...depending on the exterior trim, the window size, and/or the creative skill of the installer.
Replacement windows have no "nailing fin" and can be purchased in stock or custom sizes.. This allows them to be installed with minimal disruption to the existing trim, siding, sheetrock or exterior veneer - assuming the previous window frame is left in place with its flashing intact.
